ACA and Short-Term Medical Plans

ACA and Short-Term Medical Plans

Health Insurance Options for Every Need and Budget

Healthcare coverage is essential, whether you need comprehensive long-term coverage or temporary insurance between jobs or major life events. Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans and Short-Term Medical plans provide two different solutions to help you stay covered.

If you're unsure which plan is best for you, Insured Carolina is here to help you navigate your options and find the right fit for your healthcare needs and budget.

What Is the Affordable Care Act (ACA)?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA)—also known as "Obamacare"—was designed to make healthcare more accessible and affordable for individuals and families. ACA plans are offered through the Health Insurance Marketplace and must meet specific coverage requirements, ensuring essential benefits for all enrollees.

Pre-existing conditions are covered

No one can be denied coverage.

Essential health benefits included

Covers hospital visits, prescriptions, mental health care, maternity, and more.

Income-based subsidies

Lower your monthly premium and out-of-pocket costs.

Annual enrollment periods

Sign up or change plans during open enrollment.

Tip: If you qualify for a premium tax credit or cost-sharing reduction, you could get lower monthly premiums and deductibles on an ACA plan.

What Is Short-Term Health Insurance?

Short-term health insurance provides temporary medical coverage for individuals who need immediate, flexible coverage for a limited time.

Who Benefits from Short-Term Medical Insurance?

  • Individuals between jobs or waiting for employer-sponsored benefits.
  • Recent graduates transitioning from school to work.
  • Those outside the ACA open enrollment period who don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).
  • Anyone seeking a lower-cost alternative to full health insurance.

Unlike ACA plans, short-term health insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions, and benefits may vary significantly depending on the plan.

What Do ACA Plans Cover?

ACA-compliant health insurance plans are required to cover 10 essential health benefits:

  • Preventive care – Annual checkups, vaccines, and screenings at no cost.
  • Emergency services – Hospital visits and ambulance services.
  • Maternity & newborn care – Prenatal, childbirth, and postpartum care.
  • Mental health & substance abuse – Counseling, therapy, and treatment programs.
  • Prescription drug coverage – Wide range of medications covered.
  • Rehabilitative services – Physical therapy, speech therapy, and recovery care.
  • Pediatric services – Includes vision and dental for children.

Did you know? Over 90% of Marketplace enrollees qualify for financial assistance to help reduce monthly premiums.

What Do Short-Term Medical Plans Cover?

Coverage varies by provider, but most short-term plans include:

  • Doctor visits & urgent care – Limited coverage for basic medical needs.
Hospitalization & emergency care – Coverage for unexpected injuries and illnesses.
Some prescription drug benefits – Generic drugs may be covered.
Flexible coverage length – Choose from 30-day to 12-month terms.

However, short-term plans typically do not cover:

  • Pre-existing conditions (you may be denied based on your health history).
  • Maternity care, mental health services, or preventive screenings.
  • Comprehensive prescription drug benefits.

Tip: Short-term insurance is a good temporary solution, but not a replacement for long-term healthcare coverage.

When Can You Enroll?

ACA Health Insurance Enrollment Periods

  • Open Enrollment: November 1 – December 15 (coverage starts January 1).
  • Special Enrollment Period (SEP): Available if you experience a qualifying life event, such as:
  • Loss of employer coverage
  • Marriage or divorce
  • Birth or adoption of a child
  • Moving to a new coverage area
  • Losing Medicaid eligibility

Short-Term Health Insurance Enrollment

  • No specific enrollment period. You can apply and get coverage anytime during the year.

Tip: If you miss the ACA Open Enrollment Period, short-term health insurance may be an alternative until you can enroll in a full plan.
